I love the holidays! There’s just something magical about this time of year. I don’t know if it’s the anticipation of a new year, the super glittery decorations, holiday lights, or combination of all three. One thing I especially love to do is to host. Things may look a little different this year with no in-person holiday gatherings, however, trying out new recipes and holiday classics remains the same.
I could give you a long back story about something holiday-related, but I won’t! Let’s get to the recipe for Maple Bacon Bites. These little gems are the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Bonus: They’re SUPER easy and quick to make!
Ingredients (this makes 30 individual bites)
- 2 (15 counts) phyllo cups (you’ll find these in the frozen aisle with desserts)
- 1 lb bacon (any flavor you want, I recommend not using thick-cut as it’ll be too heavy for the phyllo cups)
- Brown sugar (you’re only going to use a few tbsp.’s)
- Maple syrup (1 bottle is more than enough)
Recipe
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment; you can lightly grease it if you’d like but I found it to be unnecessary.
3. Place the phyllo cups on the baking sheet, spaced apart and set aside (no certain distance, just not touching though it’s not the end of the world if they are. Life = bigger problems).
4. Cook your bacon using whatever method you prefer, just make sure not to cook it all the way in this step as it will continue cooking in the oven. Basically, get it chewy, not crispy. I fall into the “work smarter, not harder” camp so I generally cook mine in the microwave or oven if it’s a large batch and I have the time.
5. Once the bacon is cooked, roughly chop it into bite-sized pieces. No need for perfect chops here. Ps, let it cool for a minute or two prior to chopping as to not burn your fingers.
6. Prep your cups. Fill each phyllo cup in this order:
- ½ tsp of brown sugar
- A drizzle of maple syrup (seriously, just a few drops. If you prefer accuracy, ¼ tsp should do it)
- A few pieces of chopped bacon (enough to fill to the rim of the phyllo cup)
- Once all cups are filled, add a final, light sprinkle of brown sugar to all as a topper if you will
7. Put the baking sheet into the heated oven and let them cook for about 10-15 minutes or until the bacon is nice and crispy, and sugar caramelized. Once baked, take them out of the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. No need to put on a cooling rack unless you really want to, then go for it!
8. Enjoy! Try not to eat them all in one sitting as I did (no judgment if you do!).
