A short-ish read on exactly what the title says
I absolutely love this time of year! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Back in the day (well my 20s), one of the wonderful things I was known for was the parties I threw; they may have felt effortless but were meticulously planned down to the order of the songs on the playlists I made on my iPod. Between that and the fact that my house at the time was located in downtown Columbus (Victorian Village) a straight shot and a few blocks from the bars meant that on any given Thursday through Saturday, the expectation was pregaming at my place, heading to the bars, grabbing a light night slice at this awesome food truck called Mikey’s, then after hours at my place, brunch the next morning and tailgating on campus on Saturday’s for The Ohio State football games. By the way, as I’m writing this I’m smiling at the memories – even though during those years my mental health was in the shitter; while I don’t talk to the majority of the massive social circle I had back in those days, I do cherish the ridiculous and almost unbelievable adventures we had.
On a related note, the sheer thought of going out two nights in a row now being in my late 30s and not starting the night until 11 pm makes me tired and sounds terrible. I actually understand what it means when adults my now age used to say that nothing good comes after midnight. I get it.
While most nights were planned, it wasn’t terribly uncommon for people to just show up; the fridge and bar were always stocked and there was generally a 9/10 chance I’d go out on a whim (now, I require several days’ notice and time to hype myself up). One of the most epic being my Halloween party circa 2008.
I took off work just to make sure everything was perfect: I set up themed shot stations, a beer bong station which now just sounds incredibly gross to think about how many people used it back-to-back sans cleaning…I shudder at the thought..ew, a stupid amount of jello shots, a beer pong/flip cup area, snacks, décor, etc. I wish I had more pictures but one, those were the days where we carried digital cameras that were separate from our phones, and secondly, our lives didn’t revolve around a phone/camera and getting the perfect photo but rather – gasp – we lived in the present moment. Ah, the good old days.
Thank you for indulging my jaunt down memory lane…assuming you read the preceding paragraphs versus skip to the list below.
Let’s Talk Scary Movies
I fucking love a good thriller. Be it horror, psychological, etc., I love them. The only ones I’m not into at all subgenres such as body, exploitation, or torture horror (there are some truly fucked up movies out there that are banned). A particular genre I love is K-horror; a few of those faves being listed below and on my 2020 spooky season movie list. Without further adieu, here’s my 2021 list of some fave scary movies that span genres and countries (in no particular order). Rather than writing a synopsis on each, I’ll link to the trailer.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)
Ok, this one actually freaked me out which is not an easy feat. If you watch it, you’ll see a familiar face from the series Squid Game who I may or may not have a huge crush on.
Check out the trailer here; it’s available on Amazon Prime, Apple tv, tubi, etc.
The Endless
Note: to really get this movie, check out the others in the same universe which are Resolution and Synchronic. I am not endorsing this but if you are an edibles fan and live in a state/country where it’s legal and you are of actual legal age to purchase it, give it a go while watching all of these. Just saying. After viewing the trailer, you can check it out on Amazon Prime, Apple tv, etc.
The Green Inferno
If the trailer tickles your fancy, you can watch it on Netflix, Apple tv, Google Play, etc.
1922
You can currently only watch this on Netflix.
Thirst (2009)
After watching the trailer, you can find this on Amazon Prime, Google play, YouTube
The Piper (2015)
Here’s the trailer; you can watch this on Amazon Prime, Apple tv, etc.
Hell House LLC
Frankly – and this is something I rarely say – I enjoyed the entire damn collection of Hell House LLC movies. It’s very unsettling and scarier than one would initially think. Check out the trailer to the first film here. You can watch it on Amazon Prime, YouTube, Apple tv, etc.
Other notables:
- I Saw the Devil (tbh this is one of my all time faves)
- House of 1000 Corpses (1. Rainn Wilson from ‘The Office’ is in it 2. What makes this scary is that it could very much happen. Note, it’s gory)
- They Look Like People
- Platform
- The Invitation
- Martyrs
- Contraction (this one is unnerving…seriously)
Movie Night Essentials
So, we’re still in a pandemic and frankly, I’m not super comfortable going to movie theaters as I used to be. I really love that a lot of movies are premiering both in theaters and via streaming services and hope that stays post-pandemic. Check out a few of my movie night essentials; bonus, the images are directly linked to the store sites so you can instantly purchase.
